Description: This NWT range of red-sided garter snake was developed by GNWT Environment and Climate Change HQ (Joanna Wilson and Erin McHugh)in December 2025 to reflect information in the Status Report and Assessment of Red-sided Garter Snake in the NWT (Species at Risk Committee 2024), including the species occurrences shown in Figure 4of that report. The NWT portion of the range combines the Level IV ecoregion Slave Upland MB (from the NWT Ecological Land Classification) with the Watershed (sub-basin) called Great Slave Lake Drainage Area: Great Slave Lake(from sd.DBO.INW_NRCAN_CommunityCatchmentBasins). The rest of the continental range was developed by starting with the contental range for the species Thamnophis sirtalis (common garter snake) obtained from IUCNredlist.org (NatureServe and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Thamnophis sirtalis. Version 2017-3. https://www.iucnredlist.orgDownloaded in June 2024) and extracting only the T. sirtalis parietalis subspecies portion to approximate the map in Figure 2 of the SARC 2024 report. Occurrences of the subspecies obtained from GBIF.org helped in estimating the subspecies portion of the range (GBIF.org 07 June 2024 GBIF Occurrence Download https://doi.org/10.15468/dl.rgftm3). Some minor smoothing was done to join the two portions of the range at the NWT-provincial border.
