The place names data was compiled from the Atlas of Canada 1,000,000 National Frameworks Data, Canadian Place Names and validated for currentness using the Canadian Geographical Names Database. The choice of names was based on population size, historical significance and noteworthiness. Cartographic considerations were also taken into account. Population numbers were added to the data using the 2006 Statistics Canada data and other authoritative sources. The population number was obtained by matching the place name with the geographical area from the 2006 Statistics Canada database. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) First Nation Profiles were used as a source when there are no appropriate names available from the CGNDB or populations available from the Statistics Canada geographies. A selection attribute was added for each name in order to facilitate the display of names at a dense or sparse selection.The Atlas of Canada National Scale Data 1:1,000,000 Series consists of boundary, coast, island, place name, railway, river, road, road ferry and waterbody data sets that were compiled to be used for atlas large scale (1:1,000,000 to 1:4,000,000) mapping. These data sets have been integrated so that their relative positions are cartographically correct. Any data outside of Canada included in the data sets is strictly to complete the context of the data. |
